Training provides the stimulus. Recovery provides the adaptation. When recovery is treated as whatever is left over after work and training, progress becomes unpredictable and effort stops converting into results.
For people with demanding roles, the limiting factor is often not the gym. It is sleep that is routinely short, weeks with no genuine downshift, and stress that never fully clears.
Where to start
- Protect a consistent sleep window before optimising anything else about sleep.
- Give your week at least one deliberately lighter day.
- Notice which recurring commitments consistently cost you recovery, and decide whether they stay.
Recovery is also an environment question. If your surroundings and schedule make rest difficult, willpower is being asked to do a job that design should be doing.
